lyrics

She sat in her garden deep in thought
Dreaming of the boat that her father bought
He died some years ago
On the far side of town
The carnival sounds are deafening when she's down
The crackle of celebratory fireworks
The echos of the band every night like clockwork
She aches a love so deep
With her heart so ready
But her mind so unsteady
She smiles beautifully when she's cries
Beneath dark heavy skies

The waves splash and they crash
Against her cold pale neck and her salty lips
Her men come and they go
And they fall and crumble just like paper ships
In a sea of dead roses she sips

She met her soulmate at the bakery
Offering herself as plain as it could be
He owned the local fish market
She lost herself in him
When his love for her went dim
She was so surprised when he left
Then there was Captain Ivan the doctor
Who nursed her back to health while she was in despair
His loss she couldn't bare
When he was killed in action
While treating a soldier in traction in the foreign war
Just before her child was born

The waves splash and they crash
Against her cold pale neck and her salty lips
Her men come and they go
And they fall and crumble just like paper ships
In a sea of dead roses she sips

Charlie was born on a rainy day
The clouds hung low just like when Ivan rode away
On his tall horse so handsome
A man she would replace
With a child to erase him just to warm her heart
She never knew what a mess she made
She locked the door turned out the lights and shut the shade
Without ever knowing what made her happy
When she soon grew old her attitude grew cold
And she was so despised when she died
And she really never knew why

The waves splash and they crash
Against her cold pale neck and her salty lips
Her men come and they go
And they fall and crumble just like paper ships
In a sea of dead roses she sips
